Listen, it’s rare to see such rapid progression when we’re talking about a 22-year-old boxer. Boxing, unlike other sports like hockey or basketball, is a field where athletes usually develop with age and experience.
But Jhon Orobio is one of those exceptions where, despite his young age, it feels like we’re watching a boxer who’s on the verge of accomplishing great things. And he proved it last Thursday when he literally shut off veteran Yomar Alamo in the 5th round.
We shouldn’t overlook the fact that Alamo lost an extremely close decision to Liam Paro, a boxer who later became a world champion. Alamo also lost by unanimous decision to Jamaine Ortiz, another very well-known boxer.
In fact, the only time the Puerto Rican hadn’t gone to the judges’ scorecards was against Richardson Hitchins, the current IBF super lightweight champion. And guess what, it took him 8 rounds to get the job done.
So what Jhon just accomplished by taking down Alamo in the 5th round is something we hadn’t seen before. And now that Orobio is an ambassador for the prestigious Ring Magazine, we can start wondering whether it’s only a matter of time before Turki Al-Sheikh puts together a major fight for his young prodigy.

Here are four opponents we’d like to see Jhon face next:
George Kambosos Jr. (22–4, 10 KOs)
A fight against Kambosos would represent a true step-up fight for Orobio. He’s an experienced fighter who has already captured a world title and has shared the ring with some of the very best in the division, fighters like Teófimo López, whom he famously defeated, as well as the likes of Devin Haney and Vasyl Lomachenko.
While the Australian’s recent performances may suggest that his career is approaching its final stretch, a win over a dangerous rising contender could help reignite it. Someone like Jhon Orobio, one of the most dangerous prospects in the division.
For Orobio however, a victory especially a spectacular one, would send a massive message to the rest of the division that he is truly a force to be reckoned with.
It would be a thrilling matchup between two exciting fighters. Kambosos even trained in Montreal for his last fight, meaning he’s already familiar with the city. That could make this bout a realistic possibility if Eye of the Tiger Management sees value in it. Additionally, his father Jim Kambosos represents Imam Khataev, which could make negotiations relatively straightforward.

Mazlum Akdeniz (22-0, 9 K.-O)
It’s no secret that Eye of the Tiger Management and Groupe Yvon Michel are direct rivals when it comes to Quebec boxing. And although in recent years this rivalry has faded somewhat due to the lack of real competition between the two camps, GYM’s hopes now rest almost entirely in the hands of Mazlum Akdeniz.
And that’s exactly the motivation for his team to organize this fight. You match the top prospect of the entire stable against one of EOTTM’s best rising prospects. Whoever wins the fight does his promoter a huge favor and would very likely climb the World Boxing Council rankings, bringing him closer to the world title currently held by Dalton Smith.
Just imagine it for a moment, a final at the Casino de Montréal between Jhon Orobio and Mazlum Akdeniz, with the crowd split in two for the pride of Quebec boxing. The atmosphere and the tension in the air would be magical.
Although the chances of these two promoters reaching an agreement are almost nonexistent, a clash between these two fighters would be electrifying. Sometimes, we’re allowed to dream.

Jamaine Ortiz (20-3-1, 10 K.-O)
Another boxer who holds a fairly similar position to Orobio in the World Boxing Council rankings is Jamaine Ortiz.
Ortiz was supposed to face Steve Claggett on a card presented by Most Valuable Promotions in August 2025. So people at Eye of the Tiger Management are already familiar with what this fighter can bring.
Although his last outing didn’t necessarily showcase him at his best, Ortiz remains an excellent boxer. We shouldn’t overlook the fact that he fought Keyshawn Davis. The vast majority of the division would struggle to look good against a fighter of that caliber.
But Ortiz also brings experience with him. He went the distance with Teófimo López and Vasyl Lomachenko. So he knows exactly what it takes to reach the top.
And he isn’t old. At only 29 years old, it’s easy to believe he still wants another shot at a world championship.
This is the type of fight for Jhon that could be complicated and give you headaches, but if you manage to win it, it places you directly, or very close, to a championship fight.
And does the young Colombian have everything it takes to win that fight?
Yes, absolutely.

Subriel Matias (23-3, 22 K.-O)
To conclude, we propose former world champion Subriel Matías. Now, we have to understand that it would be optimistic to think that Jhon could face Matías in his very next fight.
But when we talk about “step-up fights” that could put him in a very good position, like the ones mentioned earlier, this is the kind of fight that comes afterward.
Whether Jhon faces George Kambosos Jr., Mazlum Akdeniz, Jamaine Ortiz, or any other boxer of that caliber, if he wins, he will earn a very strong position in the World Boxing Council rankings.
The Colombian is currently the WBC Continental Americas champion at 140 lbs, and he has already defended that title three times. That places him 17th in the official WBC rankings.
This means that if he wins a major fight in the near future, he will be knocking on the door of the top 10 very soon.
And Matías, who is ranked 3rd, is an experienced boxer who is mostly known for his extraordinary punching power. However, he is rarely praised for his technical boxing skills.
If Jhon boxes intelligently, it’s not unrealistic at all to believe he could win this fight by decision, or even by knockout.
And let me tell you, if that were to happen, he would put himself in a very strong position.

In short, we can’t expect Jhon Orobio to become world champion overnight. As we mentioned, he’s only 22 years old, we can’t skip steps.
But his development is going very well, and within a few fights, we could very well see Jhon standing at the top of the mountain.
