Bazinyan-Phinn and the art to promote

Noé Cloutier - Punching Grace

Photo: Vincent Ethier – The first sparks broke out from the Bazinyan-Phinn fight on Tuesday, although they did not necessarily come from the two boxers.

WITHIN 48 HOURS OF THE BAZINYAN-PHINN SHOCK, THE TICKETS HAD BEEN ALL SOLD OUT FOR ALMOST 70 DAYS. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY FOR EVERYONE TO SIT AT THE MIC, IN A PRESS CONFERENCE, AND TURN ON AUTOPILOT. HOWEVER SOMEONE AT THE TABLE WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT INTERESTED IN PLAYING THE TAPE.

“Hold my beer,” probably said coach Ian Mackillop to his protégé Shakeel Phinn before using his speech to question Erik Bazinyan’s sinusitis, the announced reason for the postponement of the gala initially scheduled for April 11.

“I was told he had a complicated sparring session and was a bit concussed. Apparently, it was against an inexperienced boxer… so imagine what Shakeel will do, Bazinyan will not make it past the 8th round,” said the cornerman who works at the Donnybrook Boxing Gym in Montreal.

“I’m quite sure of it, even, he should be careful, a coach talks a little too much in his camp,” Mackillop redoubled when Camille Estephan asked him if he called him a liar…

IT SEEMED TO BE GOOD WAR, BUT RÉGIS LÉVESQUE SHOULD HAVE LOOKED UP FROM UP THERE AND BE VERY PROUD. WE WERE NOT OBLIGED, WITH THE SOLD OUT, BUT THE SOLD THE SOLD THE FIGHT EVEN MORE.

IF YOU SAY SO, IAN

But who is telling the truth? We may never know and according to the opposing coach, Marc Ramsay, who rejected Mackillop’s idea out of hand: “it changes absolutely nothing”.

“THROUGH EXPERIENCE, I NOTICED THAT COACHES WHO DID THIS KIND OF OUTING FIRST TRY TO CONVINCE THEMSELVES. SO HE CAN SAY THAT IF IT FITS HIM, BUT IT DOES NOT CHANGE ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN THURSDAY EVENING,” RAMSAY SAID.

Unbothered,  Marc Ramsay has clearly seen something different when it comes to colorful press conferences, no need to remind you of all those years in Jean Pascal’s corner. And when the bell rings, if the plan is implemented, why worry?

“You always have to be careful, we know Shakeel Phinn is a good boxer, but we just believe that Erik is better in just about every department,” noted the ‘Bzo’ coach, seeing a complete package in terms of keys to victory.

MAGIC GLOVES?

As well as having “just about every department” on his side to take down Phinn. Erik Bazinyan will have a secret weapon to add to his arsenal.

Let’s go back to last October, when Erik Bazinyan was preparing to face Ronald Ellis. The American, fresh out of Saul Alvarez’s training camp, shows up in Montreal wearing gloves from the No Boxing No Life brand created by ‘Canelo’s’ trainer. For one reason or another, while trying them, Bazinyan decided to imitate him and, a few days later, out of nowhere, suffered a striking knockout. to Ellis.

Comfort? Superstition? One thing is certain, for a second time in three fights, Bazinyan will trust the Mexican company. Does the magic work again? In any case…

“THE RESULT WILL BE THE SAME,” BAZINYAN ASSURED.

CONTAGIOUS VENOM?

With a record of 32-0 among the pros and 108-1 among the amateurs, the gloves change, but the result is – almost – always the same for Laval Bazinyan. As his promoter Estephan recalled, this defeat was his amateur baptism of fire. In doing so, ‘Bzo’ is riding a winning streak of 140 fights.

This record impresses the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, Ring Magazine and BoxRec, who all see the Quebecer as one of the 10 best super middleweights in the world. He also made an impression with Georges St-Pierre and Bet99 who saw his author as favorite at -525 against Shakeel Phinn (26-3-1, 17 KOs).

Everything remains possible and our underdog doesn’t have too look to far to find inspiration…

Last week, her training partner Jessica ‘Cobra’ Camara (13-4, 3 KOs) landed in South Korea to surprise the formerly unbeatable Hyun Mi Choi (21-1-1, 5 KOs). .-O.). Could Cobra venom be contagious? It’s meant to be according to Shak.

“WE TOLD EACH OTHER ON Her RETURN TO THE AIRPORT: First she did it, now I’M NEXT!”

It would be a very cool story, but it’s not going to happen according to the general manager of EOTTM.

“Congratulations, Ian, on your victory in Jessica’s corner. All of Quebec is proud of it… but don’t get too used to it,” said Antonin Décarie.

ALL ABOARD!

Fortunately, Shak and Ian also have their supporters to lift the tide. Another Donnybrook regular, the popular Quebec mixed martial arts fighter Charles “Air” Jourdain was also present at the Casino to predict a victory for his friend. Saying that he had seen him sparring, the “King of Pirates” even assured that he would not be knocked out.

Is he impartial? Surely not. Just like, Antonin Décarie or Ian Mackillop, but who cares, on Tuesday, everyone sold us the sold out fight and it was pretty entertaining. Will the fight be as good? If Bazinyan has the ‘skills’ to pay the bills: no. If Shakeel Phinn is as ‘strong’ as a juggernaut: yes.

BETWEEN MAGIC GLOVES AND COBRA VENOM, WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO DREAM. And so, ACCORDING TO THE ANSON WAINWRIGHT OF THE RING MAGAZINE, CAMILLE ESTEPHAN is ALREADY DREAMing OF A BAZINYAN-PACHECO FIGHT…
