There were probably a few boxers well-known to Quebec fans who were licking their lips. David Benavidez’s announcement did not go unnoticed last Saturday.
The door has opened at 175 lbs.
The Mexican monster announced he would be moving up to light heavyweight for his next fight. Just looking at his physique, it’s hard to blame him. It’s even harder to understand how he used to fight at 168 pounds. He may not have a six-pack, but he’s an absolute tank.
In short, the WBC belt will become vacant if Benavidez truly follows through and faces Gilberto Ramirez. Looking at the WBC rankings, you don’t have to dig very far to find Imam Khataev or even Mehmet Unal.
Of course, nothing can ever be taken for granted in boxing. These two fighters from the EOTTM stable aren’t the only ones who would deserve a shot at the title—especially with names like Artur Beterbiev and David Morrell ranked ahead of them. Still, the possibility they could get the call remains very real.

Imam Khataev
Yes, Khataev is coming off a loss, which won’t help his case, but there are still a few things to keep in mind.
First, the Russian fought Morrell in his last bout. Even though David Morrell is from Cuba, Khataev found himself in hostile territory in New York. The crowd clearly had a favorite. That didn’t stop Imam from delivering a fantastic performance, dropping the Cuban in the 5th round.
Khataev didn’t leave with the win, but many boxing fans found the decision highly questionable. Losses like that leave a bitter taste. Still, a lot of people were extremely impressed by his performance.
On top of that, Imam now has a golden chance to erase that loss when he faces Adam Deines on December 11th. Deines has taken on tough opponents such as Artur Beterbiev and Albert Ramirez. A quick, decisive win could put Khataev right back into the world-title picture. That’s exactly what happened for Ramirez a few fights after he beat Deines…

Mehmet Unal
As for Unal, his global recognition isn’t as high yet—but he destroys everything in his path. The Turkish fighter has knocked out his last five opponents, and in spectacular fashion. He is currently ranked 14th by the WBC.
A high-profile fight in his next outing could place him in a very strong position. And for Unal, no matter who they put in front of him, the game plan never really changes. He might not be the most technical boxer, but his punching power tilts the scale his way every time.
So far, it’s working. Time will tell if this strategy will pay off on the world stage. All hopes are on the table.

And locally?
Imam Khataev and Mehmet Unal aren’t the only ones looking for an opportunity to shine. If you’re looking for a reason to attend the December 11th gala in Gatineau, here are a few.
First, former heavyweight world champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse will return to action for the first time since her fight against Claressa Shields. She is still ranked second by the WBC. The division doesn’t have many fighters, so a strong performance could put her back in a favorable position quickly.

Also, several promising young boxers will be in action.
Among them, former Canadian amateur champion Victor Tremblay will make his return to the ring. He made his pro debut in January, but an injury has kept him away from competition since. It’s a golden opportunity for the 21-year-old to showcase himself in front of the Gatineau crowd. He’ll be ready no matter who stands in front of him—he’s been training in the U.S. with Terence Crawford’s coach to ensure he has the best camp possible.
Finally, Alexandre Gaumont will try to show what he’s made of. He’ll be facing Ramadan Hiseni, an opponent who isn’t afraid to come fight in Quebec. Hiseni even earned a draw against Shamil Khataev in June 2024.
If Gaumont can defeat Hiseni—and do it in style—the future looks very promising.
