Photo: Vincent Ethier – Osleys Iglesias (11-0, 10 KOs) once again lived up to his nickname ‘El Tornado’ by violently stopping Evgeny Shvedenko (16-2-1, 7 KOs) from the 1st round.
I would have liked to write about the June 6 main event. It was a great All-Quebec fight. However, I’m running out of words…
I’m running out of words to talk about Steven Butler. I wish him a rematch, but Éric Bélanger’s ‘I think we’re going to move on’ makes me doubt it.
Also…
I lack words to talk about Patrice Volny. I wish him the international fight he is hoping for, but the management of his career by Lee Baxter Promotions makes me doubt it.
Luckily, I have one word for Osleys Iglesias: TERRIFYING.
Brutal and viral
It was already impressive to see the IBO champion destroy Marcelo Coceres in March. Three months later, we all expected Evgeny Shvedenko to – at least – work more than one round.
But no, the Iglesias Tornado was only more devastating.
It was both terrifying and amazing. In 24 hours, more than a million people (on X only) had viewed the KO and the disturbing convulsions caused by the Cuban right hand.
Before the fight, Camille Estephan told Ring Magazine’s Anson Wainwright that Iglesias was the best kept secret in the sport. The secret is out of the bag, but the situation remains imperfect. Who the hell wants to face their protégé now?
‘Good luck to the next matchmaker,’ said Laurent Poulin.
Luck being already offered, I therefore offer 5 relatively realistic suggestions for the next opponent for Osleys Iglesias.
Trevor McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs)
Its name that resonates for several reasons. He is a former protégé of Golden Boy, Top Rank and even EOTTM, for a few days (in 2021). With 25 victories as a light heavyweight, he was absent from the ring for 4 and a half years to return, but at super middleweight. Since then, he has 3 victories and is now ranked 11th by the WBA. His weight class has changed, but his phone number may be the same. Camille Estephan could therefore call McCumby who, after 13 years in the pros, could consider responding if he finally wants to take his career somewhere.
Shakeel Phinn (26-3-2, 17 KOs)
BOOM. A local fight. He would probably prefer a rematch against Bazinyan, but ‘Bzo’ will apparently swim in international waters first. Iglesias still has an IBO title and a 9th WBC rank, where Phinn finds himself at 21st. He may have started boxing late, but at the dawn of his 34th birthday, can the Jamaican Juggernaut really afford to turn down such an opportunity?
Pavel Silyagin (14-0-1, 7 KOs)
We bring in another Russian, this time undefeated. If memory serves, he was ranked 10th by Ring Magazine… until his controversial draw against Shvedenko. Since then, he has rebounded by stopping an undefeated guy in the first round face. Other interesting feats of arms: he went 12 rounds with Chilemba (like Iglesias), he faced Jose de Jesus Macias (like the ½ of Quebec), he defeated Jose de Jesus Macias (like the ¼ of Quebec) and he is ranked 14th WBA!
Shawn McCalman (15-1, 7 KOs)
Call Kathy Duva, she’s the perfect candidate. First of all, ‘The Amazing’ is American. Two, his only loss was a competitive decision against Diego Pacheco broadcast on DAZN. We do the good old thing we did with Coceres and Shvedenko, we bring in a guy who gave headaches to the elite and we hope to pulverize him to prove that we are better.
Roamer Angulo (28-3, 23 KOs)
When it comes to comparisons, Angulo offers solid one; 12 rounds against ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, 10 rounds against Benavidez and 10 more against Berlanga. He’s already fought in 9 countries and is undefeated in 8 of them, so he wouldn’t be afraid to try a 10th. Plus, Quebec loves Colombians. If we bring in Angulo, we can add Jhon Orobio to the card. The broadcast rights would be so popular in Latin America that Matt Casavant would have no choice but to polish his Spanish to keep up with demand.
But before we get to excited, let’s see who rises to enter the eye of the Tornado…
